Our multi-disciplinary approach to cancer care brings together
the resources and training of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists,
pathologists, surgeons, registered nurses, dieticians, social workers
and other clinicians who work to design treatment programs that
accommodate the special needs of oncology patients and their families.
Offering the full spectrum of cancer care from education to diagnosis
and treatment, we commit ourselves daily to detecting, controlling
and curing cancer. Our cancer care unit, outpatient infusion center
and radiation oncology department provides chemotherapy, biotherapy,
radiation therapy and symptom management in inpatient and outpatient
settings.
Lafayette Generals Cancer Care is accredited by the American
College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for our comprehensive cancer
program. The commission bases its accreditation on appropriate diagnosis,
including staging of cancers, as well as treatment.
To ensure our patients receive the best possible care, Physician
Tumor Board meetings are held twice a month. Physicians in many
disciplines attend these meetings. Doctors discuss cases of newly
diagnosed cancers and appropriate treatment options, giving the
oncology patients the benefit of a multidisciplinary physician review
of their case.
LGMC's Home Health service provides cancer therapies, patient care
and cancer education in the patient's home. In the case
of terminally ill patients, LGMC and Hospice of Acadiana collaborate
to offer inpatient hospice services like pain and symptom management,
counseling and referral. Comprehensive cancer care means more than
providing treatment for all types of cancers and care for all types
of people. It means playing an active role in cancer awareness in
our community, teaching cancer prevention, offering screenings and
instilling in everyone the importance of early detection and cancer
prevention.
Radiation Oncology
LGMC's Radiation Oncology Center is a hospital-based facility, providing the
most advanced radiation therapy available today. Our board-certified
radiation oncologists, radiation therapists and registered nurses work
closely with the entire cancer team to ensure continuity of care during
every phase of cancer treatment. The Center has two photon linear
accelerators which allow the radiation oncologist to plan the most effective
treatment individualized to each patient. The accelerators both utilize
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, or IMRT, to deliver high doses of
radiation directly to cancer cells. LGMC has invested in the most advanced
linear accelerator on the market today. This IMRT treatment uses
computer-generated images to plan and then deliver the most tightly focused
radiation. Both accelerators are able to conform more closely to the shape
of the tumor, sparing more of the surrounding healthy tissue.A Nucletron CT
Simulator provides accurate imaging and localization of tumors for treatment
planning. With an integrated computer program, this information is quickly
and accurately assimilated for the most precise treatment planning and dose
administration, and a record and verify system that better serves the needs
of our patients.
The Radiation Oncology Center has brachytherapy capabilities that include
High Dose Remote Brachytherapy and surgical implants of radioactive substances
such as Cesium, Iridium, and Palladium. In many instances, radioactive implants
combined with external beam radiation oncology deliver the best chance of cure
or control of tumors.
Inpatient Hospice
An essential component of LGMC's continuum of care, inpatient hospice
is currently located in the home-like setting of the Oncology Unit.
It complements our mission to this community to provide competent,
compassionate, quality health care by providing comfort for patients
and support for family members. Medical referrals are directed to
staff members of Hospice of Acadiana, who work with the LGMC staff,
the attending physician, the patient and family to develop a plan
of care. Pain and symptom management, terminal care, counseling
and referral services are available for any patient who qualifies
for inpatient hospice services.
Education and Support Groups
Ongoing educational opportunities and support groups are open
to cancer patients, friends and family members, as well as healthcare
providers. Call 337-289-8068 for more information and meeting dates
or check out our Calendar of Events on this website.
